Explanation of "Y" Grades

The Barnard Registrar explains that:

"Students in year-long research seminars receive a grade of Y at the end of the first semester (assuming they have done sufficient work to merit the Y). The Y is not a final grade, so the credits are not included in completed credits. When the Registrar's Office receives the grade for the spring course, this grade is applied also to the fall course (for example, Y becomes YA-), and the points are included in completed points. That is, in May, when the final grade comes in, the student receives 8 points, 4 for fall, 4 for spring.
Therefore, students should not worry that they have not yet received the 4 points for fall; they should include those 4 points as potentially completed when they calculate how many points they need in the spring to have enough credits to graduate."
