Sequential Character - Economic History Major
You will get more out of the major, and get better grades, if you attend to the pattern of prerequisites.
1. Intro before Economics Core
An introductory course (BC1001, BC1002, W1105) is a prerequisite for the core courses.
An introductory course in microeconomics (BC1002) is a prerequisite for Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (BC3035).
There is no prerequisite for statistics (BC2411) is a prerequisite for Econometrics (BC3018). (STAT W1101, W1111, or W1211 may be substituted for ECON BC2411.)
2. Core before Economic History Requirements
There is no economics prerequisite for Topics in Economic History (BC2014). At least one of the core theory courses (BC3033, BC 3035) is required for Economic History of the U.S. (ECON W3213 may be substituted for ECON BC3033 (at Columbia), and ECON W3211 (at Columbia) may be substituted for BC3035.)
3. History Concentration and Elective
Three of the four required history courses must be in a single concentration. Consult with your adviser to determine your field of concentration and the courses that satisfy it. One of the four courses may be of any field.
4. Economics Core, Economic History, and History Requirements before Thesis
The Senior Thesis (the sequence ECH BC3066 and BC3067) is required for the Economic History major. You should complete all requirements other than the thesis by the end of the junior year.
At the end of your junior year, you should obtain the consent of a professor in either the Economics or History Department to serve as your principal thesis adviser. You and your major adviser will identify a rofessor from the other department to serve as a second reader. You should consult your major adviser during your junior year if you have any questions about how to find a thesis adviser.
