Quantitative Dimension - Economics and Mathematics

1. Two semesters of calculus are required. The Economics department now recommends the following sequence: MATH V1101 Calculus I followed by MATH V1201 Caluclus III.* We also encourage you to take MATH 1202 Calculus IV if you are able to do so since it is a prerequisite to many upper-level mathematics courses.

Also acceptable is a more fast-paced sequence for advanced students -- V1107-8 Honors Calculus.

2. Two semesters of statistics and econometrics are required. Students should take Intro to Probability and Statistics (SIEO W3600) but if it is not offered in a particular year, then a more advanced form of that course, SIEO W4150, can be substituted. Most students take Econometrics (ECON BC3018) but Introduction to Econometrics (ECON W3412 at Columbia) is also acceptable.

3. In addition to the courses listed above, majors must take 4 more mathmatics courses. You should take Linear Algebra (MATH V2010) as soon as you can after the calculus sequence followed by Analysis and Optimization (MAT V2500). For the two remaining mathematics elective courses above the 2000 level, you should consider Ordinary Differential Equations (MATH V3027), Dynamical Systems (MATH V3030), and Introduction to Modern Analysis (MATH W4061). Many other mathematics elective course are also available and you should pick these in consultation with your major advisors.

* (The Mathematics department has changed its Calculus offerings starting in the fall 2003 semester so that Calculus II and III can be taken in any order, provided the student receives a final grade of B or better in I. And since Calculus III has more topics directly relevant to Economics, we recommend taking III instead of II)
