ECON BC2411 Statistics for Economics

Professor Kristin Mammen, Fall 2007:

Course description: This course is a theoretical and practical introduction to probability and statistics. Topics include descriptive statistics, or methods of summarizing, describing, and graphically illustrating data; elementary probability rules and concepts; random variables and probability distributions; and statistical methods for point and interval estimation. We will learn statistical methods which allow us to make inferences about a population based on information we have about a smaller sample taken from this population. We will learn how to summarize the information available in large data sets with just a few figures, and how we can use these figures to make relevant decisions. We will link theory to data through the use of computers.

Prerequisites: None.
