Globalization and the Industrial Revolution
The course is an introduction to the global economic changes that began to take place in the early modern period, the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of a global economy by the 20th century. Its emphasis is on grand transformative forces in economic history with an emphasis on the rise of Western Europe and its extensions.
Topics include the rise of financial capitalism, the first and second industrial revolutions, transcontinental migration, the emergence of international markets in goods and capital, the rise of the factory and modern managerial capitalism, and the institutions the underpinned these economic transformations. Topics are selected to introduce students as well to basic concepts and applications of quantitative methods used commonly in economics and economic history.
